10 Amazing 10-minute Work Breaks To Take

When you’re having a stressful day at work, making yourself a priority is the last thing on your to-do list, so we came up with 10 amazing 10-minute work breaks to take when you need to get re-focused! Whether it’s a short scenic walk or a productive bought of desk cleaning, 10 minutes can go a long way with these 10 unique ideas. Do you have a break idea you like to do? Share it in the comments below!

1. Do nothing!

Sometimes giving your brain a rest is the perfect way to center yourself and refocus. Try letting go of your computer mouse, leaning back in your chair and closing your eyes. Let your mind de-clutter and take a break from all the hard work you’ve been doing. If you can’t seem to give up the control, check out DoNothing which plays ocean sounds and resets a timer if you move your mouse!

2. Get outdoors

Nothing feels better than getting up and moving your body, especially after hours of sitting at a desk. The next time you need a break, step outside and sit on the park bench under your favorite tree and people watch or take a short scenic walk. The sunshine will give you your daily dose of Vitamin D and a brisk walk, even for 10 minutes, increases stress-relieving endorphin levels and improves brain function. Try this pedometer app to track your steps and set goals! Pedometer++

3. Fuel up

Whether it’s stepping out to your favorite cafe around the corner or brewing up a hot drink at home, start making an excuse to take an extra 10 minute coffee break during your work day. Indulging in an act of comfort boots happiness while the chance to see new faces is an exciting distraction. If you want to go a step further, pick up coffee for the whole office or a co-worker for the chance to spread the joy and make someone else’s day! Try the Starbucks app, which lets you earn points towards freebies, find your nearest store and pay right from your phone!

4. Brainstorm

Pick something on your to-do list or an upcoming project and take 10 minutes to brainstorm on it. Spending a concentrated amount of time on something that stresses you out will help you tackle it easier later. Break out the Post-it notes or go Beautiful Mind on the whiteboard. Or if you’re like me, head over to your favorite stationery store and buy a cute notebook to do your scribbling in. See my favorite Rifle Paper notebooks here!

5. De-clutter

Have you been staring at that empty coffee cup or pile of junk mail for the last few days? Take a few minutes to clean up around your work space and you’ll be surprised at how much better you feel! __ from __ found that a chaotic area leads to eating more junk food, sending the message “if the world is so cluttered why should I try to control what I eat?”. Real Simple had some great DIY tips to turn a messy desk into a tidy one.

6. Have a laugh

Did you know that laughter can help decrease stress? According to Dr. Lisa Rosenberg, humor, especially dark humor, can help workers cope with stressful situations. She says, “the act of producing humor… gives us a mental break and increases our objectivity in the face of overwhelming stress”. So the next time you find yourself in a stressful situation or about to head into a tense meeting, head on over to NBC and watch some of the latest SNL clips which are sure to at least crack out a smile!

7. Get pin-crazy!

Nothing says a break like 10 minutes on Pinterest! It’s a great place to get inspired, gather new ideas and improve your work. However, this break will need to strategically planned or else you’ll take a “break” at 3:45 and by 8pm you’re deep down a rabbit hole of planning your best friend’s imaginary baby’s first birthday. So set a timer on your phone or choose just one topic to pin, narrowing down your scope and decreasing the likelihood of 10 minutes turning into three and a half hours.

8. Master a language

…or a few words. One of my favorite apps is Duolingo—a virtual classroom where you can learn up to 22 languages through easy and exciting e-courses right on your phone! Have you been wanting to learn Spanish so you can finally watch Telenovela without subtitles? Or maybe you want to learn Italian to get closer to your family roots. Whatever the reason, 10 minutes is all you need to get through a lesson and learn a few new words. Keep up the ritual and you’ll be a language pro in no time!

9. Change you view

Sometimes a simple change of scenery can do wonders for the soul, and changing your computer wallpaper is the best place to start! The small act of browsing through beautiful backgrounds will boost your mood and make you feel more productive. Certain colors even affect your mood! Choose a yellow-based image for creativity and positive energy, or something with the color blue for tranquility and confidence. Some of my favorite wallpapers are from Blog Pixie and will get you feeling #fabulous.

10. Skim the news

One of my favorite morning routines is sitting down at my desk with a fresh brewed tea and catching up on the latest news for the day. And instead of going to 5 different news sites I can easily get a detailed snippet of everything I need to know thanks to The Skimm. This 10 minute time-out makes me feel like I know what’s going on around me and allows me to take a break while getting educated at the same time… so bonus break! No matter what you do, 10 minutes is time well spent when you fill it with something you need.
